In the past few weeks we worked together with Captain VR to create a small Hololens application for research into the treatment of wasp phobia using AR technology.
“A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder, defined by a persistent fear of an object or situation. The phobia typically results in a rapid onset of fear and is present for more than six months. The affected person will go to great lengths to avoid the situation or object, typically to a degree greater than the actual danger posed. If the feared object or situation cannot be avoided, the affected person will have significant distress. Usually a person has phobias to a number of objects or situations.”
Specific phobias are best treated with exposure therapy. Here the person is introduced to the situation or object in question until the fear resolves. Medication simply doesn’t help with this type of phobia.
Captain VR is a life coaching organisation that specializes in treating people with phobias. They see techniques like virtual reality and augmented reality as the new way to help people face their fears. They asked TWNKLS to design and develop a Microsoft Hololens application to help with the treatment of phobia for wasps.
TWNKLS delivered an application in which there are 3 levels.
Each level is designed to slowly increase the fear level of the person wearing the Hololens.
Level 1 are 3 wasps flying about 5 meters from the user.
Level 2 will place the wasps a bit closer.
Level 3 will place the wasps very close and makes them chase the user if he or she walks away.
We used Unity’s 3D sound support within this application. Using 3D sound within a Hololens experience makes the holograms even more vivid and will create a more realistic effect.
After a solid field test the client was very excited and could see the full potential of using the Hololens in their field of work.
This application is built with the TWNKLS HoloLib.
