Augmented Reality: Empowering Industry 4.0
Augmented Reality: for some it’s science fiction. But those in the know have been using it for years to reduce faults, increase efficiency, and improve their bottom line. Companies like Boeing, DAF, and DHL rely on augmented reality to keep their processes running smoothly. If you want to know how to make your company leaner, improve your sales, prevent costly shut-downs, and see the future of manufacturing then keep reading.
Let’s start with the basics and go into what AR is all about.
The value of Augmented Reality
Augmented reality is about placing digital information into the real world in the right context. AR has you look at the world through a device like a smartphone, tablet, or smart glasses. This device recognizes what you’re looking at and then places a digital addition on top of what you see, called an augmentation. This can be an instruction, a video, a 3D animation – anything that adds value. It’s always in the right perspective, it’s always very clear, and it’s always accurate. Put simply augmented reality bridges the gap between information and context.
Learn while you do
What this means is that you can see information about your task directly onto what you’re doing, while you’re doing it. Before, if you wanted to know how to do something you had to stop doing that task and focus on a book, a computer screen, or a training class. Now you can learn while you do. And share that with whoever you want. That is the key value of AR.
A new smarter worker
In this series we will focus on what AR can do from a worker standpoint, as well as from a business standpoint. It’s the combination of these drivers that makes AR one of the key enablers of Industry 4.0. After all Industry 4.0 is about connections and knowledge. Like connecting workers with knowledge, and connecting the consumer with industry. By offering information exactly where and when it’s needed AR enables a new, smarter worker.
This is part one in our four-part series on Augmented Reality in Industry 4.0. Our following publications will show you real world examples of AR solutions. The focus will be on Training & Instruction, Measure & visualization, Maintenance & Repair and Remote Expert and prepare you for the future of Industry 4.0. So don’t miss our next story!
